Gatton residents have just gained greater access to recycling with the opening of the first Containers for Change drive-through depot in the town.
Return-It Gatton began accepting eligible beverage containers for refund this week at the new all-weather facility at 8 Industrial Road.
The Containers for Change scheme provides customers with a 10-cent refund for every eligible beverage container returned at a registered refund point in Queensland.
The Gatton region has previously been serviced by bag drop locations at the Gatton Tip Shop and the Transfer Station at Laidley Heights, where customers are still able to deposit bags of beverage containers for refund.
The new drive-through Container Refund Point (CRP) will be open seven days a week enabling customers to claim refunds immediately via cash or straight into their bank account through use of a scheme ID.
Residents, charities, community groups and businesses in the area have already claimed more than $2.5 million in refunds by returning 25 million containers since the Containers for Change scheme began in November 2018.
Ken Noye is the chief executive of Container Exchange, the not-for-profit organisation that administers the Containers for Change scheme. He said Gatton residents had shown their passion for recycling, and the new facility would provide them even more convenience to return containers.
“Our ambitious target is to recycle more than 85 per cent of sold eligible beverage containers by 2022,” said Mr Noye.
“Gatton residents have found the cash in their containers with more than $2.5 million in refunds already claimed through the scheme.
“The new drive-through container refund point will provide locals in the area with further opportunity to cash in their beverage containers while cleaning up the Queensland environment.
“Since the inception of Queensland’s container refund scheme in 2018, Containers for Change has recycled more than 4 billion beverage containers and returned $400 million to individuals, community groups, charities, businesses and councils.
“Together we are making a positive impact to the environment and local communities, but there is more work to do.”
The new container refund depot will accept containers every day from 8am.
