Recycling has a bright future in South East Queensland, with the launch of the region’s first solar-powered Containers for Change Reverse Vending Machine (RVM).
This Australia Made Week (18 – 24 May 2026), Containers for Change is celebrating the success of the new Keperra RVM, which uses homegrown technology and Queensland sunshine to power recycling.
Located at Great Western Super Centre, the RVM was manufactured by Queensland green technology company Ecoboxtec and is operated by recycling business Community Co Recycling.
Since launching in April 2026, the RVM has received more than 88,000 containers, putting more than $8,800 in 10-cent refunds back into the pockets of Queenslanders.
Community Co Recycling, which operates refund points across the Brisbane metro area, said the success of the Keperra RVM highlighted the value of providing convenient recycling options where people already go about their daily lives.
“The RVM is located close to the shopping centre, so claiming your 10-cent refund or donating it to charity is as easy as bringing your containers along with your weekly shop,” Community Co Recycling Managing Director Doogan O’Hanlon said.
Ecoboxtec Founder and Director Julien Craeye said technology designed and built “for Queenslanders, by Queenslanders” ensured the systems were engineered for local conditions and communities, while keeping investment, manufacturing and expertise in Queensland.
“Our Australian Made solar-powered RVMs are built to handle tough Australian conditions while providing a reliable and sustainable way for communities to recycle,” Mr Craeye said.
Lauren Christian, Executive General Manager of Strategy, Design and Technology at COEX, the not-for-profit that runs Containers for Change, said the project showed what was possible when Queensland innovators, local operators and the scheme work together.
“By combining homegrown technology with on-the-ground expertise, we’re expanding the network in smarter, more sustainable ways and making recycling even more accessible for communities,” Ms Christian said.
The Keperra RVM accepts containers between 7am to 9pm, 7 days a week. Customers can use their Containers for Change member number to receive their 10-cent refund directly to their bank account or donate to a charity.
