Sea World Foundation and Containers for Change are joining forces to prevent drink containers from becoming ocean pollution or ending up in landfill.
As part of the partnership, guests to Sea World will be able to drop off their bottles, cans and poppers at the Containers for Change bins throughout the park and for every item recycled, 10 cents will be donated to Sea World Foundation. Queenslanders can also extend their impact outside of the park by returning eligible containers to their local Containers for Change refund point or using the home collection service and donating their refund by choosing Sea World Foundation as their charity of choice.
The partnership will also see Containers for Change become the presenting partner for Sea World’s feature Seal Guardian Presentation, with the specially branded Containers for Change bins featuring in the educational and entertaining presentation.
Sea World Foundation Head of Marine Sciences, Wayne Phillips said the partnership highlighted both organisations’ shared commitment to protecting and conserving the marine environment for future generations.
“We are thrilled to partner with Containers for Change and join them in their mission to reduce container litter and increase community recycling efforts,” he said.
“Sadly at Sea World Foundation, we see first-hand the damage plastic pollution and debris are doing to marine wildlife, and it is wonderful to partner with Containers for Change to reduce and remove the risk of these negative impacts for animals such as whales, dolphins, dugongs, seals, sharks, sea turtles, and seabirds.
“The partnership also allows us to educate over a million people every year through the Seal Guardians presentation where our talented marine mammal specialists, with the help of some feathered and flippered friends, showcase recycling tips people can use in their everyday lives to reduce litter.”
Natalie Roach, chief executive officer of Container Exchange, which runs Containers for Change in Queensland said the partnership with Sea World Foundation reflects both organisations’ commitment to preserving Queensland’s waterways, precious marine life, and ocean environment for generations to come.
“Through our partnership we’re delighted to be preventing even more containers from ending up as landfill or litter that too often find their way into our oceans. We’re also creating huge fundraising opportunities for marine research, rescue and conservation,” Ms Roach said.
“We are thrilled that visitors to the Seal Guardian Presentation will have a chance to learn about container recycling and how, by using the park’s Containers for Change bins, their 10-cent refunds will contribute to Sea World Foundation continuing its mission of marine conservation.
“As an iconic Queensland tourist attraction where people from all around the world learn about our unique marine environment, we are proud to be a part of Sea World’s message of caring for our oceans, waterways and our beautiful state.”
Sea World Foundation is dedicated to understanding, protecting and conserving the marine environment for future generations through research, rescue and conservation activities.
Cleaning up our state since November 2018, Containers for Change aims to increase recycling rates and reduce litter by allowing Queenslanders to exchange eligible drink containers to either earn a 10- cent refund for each container returned or donate the proceeds of those refunds to their nominated community group.
Container Exchange (COEX) is the not-for-profit organisation that implements the Containers for Change scheme in Queensland on behalf of the Queensland Government.
