Containers for Change drives recycling success at Rockynats

Container Refund Rockhampton General Manager Angela West at Rockynats 2026.

Rockynats 2026 saw more than 38,000 containers collected and recycled through Containers for Change, helping drive Queensland’s circular economy forward.

The state’s largest car and bike festival attracted more than 65,000 attendees, with 150 container recycling bins conveniently located across the site.

Container Refund Rockhampton, operating from its Park Avenue depot, has serviced the Containers for Change bins at Rockynats for four years since 2023.

The work is coordinated through Rockhampton Regional Council, which engages Container Refund Rockhampton to manage container collection across the festival’s four precincts: Showgrounds, Campgrounds, CBD and the Burnouts precinct.

“It’s a real highlight for us to be part of Rockynats each year,” Angela West, General Manager of Container Refund Rockhampton said.

“Not only do we get to experience everything this incredible event brings to the region, but we also get to play our part in making sure as many containers as possible are diverted from landfill and recycled through Containers for Change.”

Thomas Juzwin, Executive General Manager at Container Exchange (COEX), the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change, said the results demonstrated the impact of embedding container recycling into large-scale events.

“Rockynats is a great example of how councils can lead by embedding container recycling into the planning of major events,” Mr Juzwin said.

“Keeping 38,000 containers out of landfill over a single weekend is a fantastic outcome and a strong example of how Containers for Change is making a real difference right across regional Queensland.”
