200,000 meals have been delivered to Queenslanders in need thanks to container donations supporting Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, OzHarvest.
Since 2018, 1,000,000 containers have been donated to OzHarvest through Queensland’s container refund scheme, Containers for Change, by corporate supporters, community groups and individual Queenslanders passionate about the cause.
Those containers generated $100,000 in 10-cent refunds, helping OzHarvest continue its mission to stop food waste, feed people in need and protect our planet.
With every 10 containers collected helping to deliver two meals, the container refunds have directly contributed to 200,000 meals for people facing food insecurity.
Trevor Evans, Interim CEO of Container Exchange (COEX), the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change in Queensland, said container recycling goes hand-in-hand with supporting local communities in tangible ways.
“Every container returned through Containers for Change is an opportunity to deliver positive environmental, social and economic outcomes for our state,” Mr Evans said.
“OzHarvest’s impact is a brilliant way for Queenslanders to see exactly where their 10-cent refunds go when they choose to donate to an important cause.
“It is a privilege to work alongside community groups, charities and organisations like OzHarvest to care for our community. In this case, ensuring good food doesn’t go to waste, and container waste doesn’t go to landfill.”
Michaela Windsor, OzHarvest Queensland State Manager, said so many Queenslanders are experiencing hunger and hardship right now, and OzHarvest is committed to doing everything they can to reduce food waste and help feed people in need.
“Containers for Change is a great opportunity for collective action that leads up to big impacts,” Ms Windsor said.
“I’m encouraging individuals, businesses, community groups, everyone, to collect their containers and donate the refunds to OzHarvest. It’s a small but mighty way to nourish our country.”
Queenslanders can donate their container refunds directly to OzHarvest by using the member number C10006261 at more than 400 Containers for Change refund points across the state.
