It’s raining cans and dogs: Schnauzer Rescue Queensland turn recycling into rescue

Ten-cent container recycling is adding up for a Queensland not-for-profit dedicated to rehoming and rescuing a beloved dog breed.

Since 2024, Schnauzer Rescue Queensland has raised over $2,000 in funding with schnauzer supporters returning more than 20,000 containers through Containers for Change.

Each container donated to the not-for-profit helps fund the rescue and rehoming of schnauzers across the state, including veterinary care and dental surgery, as part of their commitment to encourage responsible dog ownership and breeding.

The volunteer-led group relies on a network of passionate supporters and fellow schnauzer lovers who collect eligible containers and donate their refunds directly to Schnauzer Rescue Queensland via the Containers for Change app.

Kirk Muddle, President of Schnauzer Rescue Queensland, said the milestone highlights how small, everyday actions can add up, while also drawing attention to both rescue dogs and responsible recycling.

“Containers for Change is a brilliant way for us to raise additional funds rather than relying solely on direct donations. It’s a win-win; keep rubbish out of landfill while supporting schnauzers in need,” Mr Muddle said.

“We’d like to thank our loyal community who continue to support us, and we hope other charities and community groups see what’s possible through container refunds, recognising it as a valuable stream of funding.”

Trevor Evans, Interim CEO of Container Exchange, the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change, said Schnauzer Rescue Queensland’s story is what the scheme is all about.

It is heartwarming to see 10-cent container recycling helping to find forever homes for dogs in need,” Mr Evans said.

“Schnauzer Rescue Queensland is one of thousands of charities, community groups and not-for-profits across Queensland tapping into the power of the scheme to raise vital funds, reduce litter and protect our environment.”

Queenslanders can donate their refund directly to Schnauzer Rescue Queensland through the Containers for Change app (member number C11443553).
