Containers to make a big change at Ekka

At this year’s much anticipated Ekka visitors will have the option to donate their empty drink containers to help a local charity and the environment thanks to Containers for Change.

Partnering with the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA), has enabled over 300 green Containers for Change bins to be accessible throughout the Ekka showgrounds.

The bins are expected to be filled with hundreds of thousands of drink containers from over 400, 000 visitors attending the show across the nine days.

Each eligible drink container placed in the bins will provide a 10-cent refund through the Containers for Change scheme with proceeds going to the RNA Foundation. Eligible drink containers include most cans, glass, plastic bottles, and even poppers.

The RNA Foundation is a charity that celebrates and champions the essential role agriculture plays in the everyday lives of Queenslanders. The funds raised will aid agricultural heritage preservation, awareness and development.

They will also help to support an agricultural education bursary and Rural Leadership Program. Containers for Change will have their own stand on Gregory Terrace where they are encouraging visitors to take part in their special Popper Rescue – Ekka Edition game.

The game will award the daily high score leader with a pair of Apple AirPods along with other prizes for anyone participating.

Visitors wanting to learn more about recycling can also visit the b105 stand where they can play ‘Boppin’ Bottles’.

This fishing-inspired game requires punters to catch eligible drink containers from a miniature version of the Brisbane river.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn all things container recycling and chat to Containers for Change staff on site about cashing in with the scheme.

Each of these interactive games provides visitors with further education around the importance of recycling and how using the scheme helps to keep billions of eligible drink containers out of landfill.

Virginie Marley, acting CEO of Container Exchange, the non-for-profit that runs the container refund scheme, is thrilled to be back at Ekka in a bigger way than ever before.

“Every Queenslander can participate in Containers for Change. We are working with many major events, partnering with them to provide a cost effective recycling solution that a local charity can benefit from,” said Ms Marley.

“The Ekka is an iconic event in our state and having our green bins onsite this year enables us to provide visitors the option to keep their empties out of Queensland landfill. We are proud the refunds from every container donated to the RNA Foundation will help support Queensland agriculture.”

“When you’re having a drink at the Ekka, look for the 10c refund mark and make sure you pop it in the green bin when you’re done to make change for the Queensland environment.

”We also have our friendly team onsite every day of the show to provide support to those who are curious about Containers for Change and offer tips on ways to best maximise their recycling efforts.”
