Queensland schools are cashing in on empty cans, bottles and poppers thanks to a new program that’s turning recycling into real dollars for local P&Cs.

COEX, the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change, has partnered with P&C Qld to provide free Donation Points to state primary and secondary schools across South East Queensland.

Donation Points are Containers for Change bag drops that will direct 100% of the 10-cent refund from eligible drink containers to the school’s P&C.

The Donation Points are accessible to the public so families, staff and community members can recycle their containers and support school initiatives.

COEX Chief Executive Office Natalie Roach said the Donation Points would be rolled out initially in South East Queensland to boost local recycling rates.

“These Donation Points will open up schools’ recycling programs to the broader community, bringing in more containers and more 10-cent refunds,” Ms Roach said.

“They also boost convenience and drive community-led container recovery in parts of the state where traditional refund points like depots simply can’t reach.”

Miami State School on the Gold Coast was the first school to receive a Donation Point and there are now more schools that have joined the program.

P&C Qld Chief Executive Officer Scott Wiseman said it was estimated schools could receive about 4,000 containers a week through their Donation Point, providing P&Cs $400 a week in funding.

“This is a fantastic fundraising initiative for the P&C that not only benefits the school and its students, but also our planet,” Mr Wiseman said.

“These Donation Points will help unlock the value of our schools providing P&Cs with hundreds of dollars in much-needed fundraising to give every child every chance to succeed in education and in life,” Mr Wiseman said.

Schools can apply for a Donation Point through P&C Qld.

The Donation Point is provided to the school by COEX for free and will be serviced by a COEX-contracted operator.
