Bayside Salvos recycle their way to a new washing machine

Retirement is on the cards for the hard-working washing machine at Bayside Salvos in Redland City after the charity turned a 10-cent container into $10,000.

The group was the charity winner of the Containers for Change Turn 10c into $10K competition, which received more than 36,000 entries from across Queensland.

Operations Manager Jodie Frazer entered the competition on behalf of Bayside Salvation Army after returning 860 to the Containers for Change depot in Cleveland.

“I did one entry and that was it. I thought ‘oh my gosh, I’ve only done one’ and we’ve won off one entry! I’m so excited,” Ms Frazer said.

Captain Natalie Frame was “speechless” when she took the phone call from Containers for Change confirming the $10,000 cash prize while on a camping holiday with her family.

“We can use the funds to feed into our community services, but we are really looking for a new washing machine,” Captain Natalie said.

“A lot of people are coming in with housing stress at the moment, sleeping rough, and our washing machine is fighting hard to keep up.”

Bayside Salvos has participated in Containers for Change for several years and uses the 10-cent refund to support its community services.

The individual winner of the Turn 10c into $10K competition was Jackie S from the Gympie region.

Since the launch of Containers for Change in 2018, Queenslanders have returned more than 10 billion containers, which has put more than $1 billion in 10-cent refunds back into the community.
