New Containers for Change depot win for Sarina’s super recyclers

MEDIA RELEASE

A brand-new Containers for Change refund point is opening in Sarina, making it easier than ever for locals to make extra money while helping the environment.

Containers for Change is Queensland’s container refund scheme, run by Container Exchange, which offers a 10-cent refund for eligible drink containers which are returned to be recycled.

Containers for Change Sarina is holding its official opening on 15 April, with the community invited to return their containers at the new facility with the chance for the first visitors to score free giveaways like branded water bottles and cooler bags.

The depot will be operated by local business owners Tammy and Mark Johncock, passionate locals who can’t wait to offer the community their first full-service container refund depot.

The depot is built for purpose, replacing the bag drop that has been the sole option for the Sarina community with a brand-new facility offering ample parking to have containers counted on the spot for an instant refund to customers with either cash or electronic payment.

Sarina residents have shown they are keen recyclers, contributing to the more than 174 million containers returned in the Mackay region since the launch of the Containers for Change program in 2018.

In its first week of operation over the Easter long weekend the new depot saw more than 40,000 containers cashed in.

Container Exchange chief executive Natalie Roach says Sarina locals have already made a huge impact with their container refunds, with the new depot offering even more opportunities for locals to cash in.

“Local community groups like the Scouts in Sarina have already made thousands of dollars using Containers for Change and we encourage everyone to get on board and use this brand-new facility with dedicated parking,”

“We find many Queenslanders like the cash option when they refund their containers, so it’s fantastic this is being offered to the Sarina community for the first time,”

“Containers for Change Sarina’s opening in time for Easter holidays is great time to earn a bit of extra money for simply returning empty drink containers,” she said.

Containers for Change Sarina will be open 8.30am – 4.00pm, Tuesday-Friday and 8.30am-12.30pm Saturdays and is located at 20 Range Road, Sarina 4737.
