Hervey Bay celebrates opening of new recycling depot

MEDIA RELEASE

Hervey Bay residents are cashing in as they celebrate the grand opening of the region’s largest and newest container refund depot.

The grand opening of Containers for Change Dundowran is taking place from 9am on 20 January, with giveaways including a $500 raffle prize for one lucky recycler.

The new depot is operated by Express Recycling and located at 3 Trade Way (Drury Lane), Dundowran, and is open seven days a week.

The new depot will provide 10-cent refunds for all eligible beverage containers at the purpose built facility using Australian-made counting machines with both drive-through and bag drop facilities.

The grand opening comes on the heels of some of the state’s most popular weeks for recycling ever, with record numbers of containers cashed in December 2022 and the first week of January 2023.

Express Recycling General Manager Paul Mullen says the new facility will bring both convenient recycling and new jobs to the Hervey Bay community.

“We chose Dundowran as Hervey Bay’s population growth has soared and is predicted to continue to grow for years to come.”

“Dundowran is expanding with lots of development occurring and is close to the Hervey Bay town centre so it’s convenient for the local and surrounding communities.”

“We have employed six staff so far and are currently recruiting with plenty of room to expand in this site as the area grows in the future,” he said.

Mr Mullen says they are expecting the new site to be very popular with the community, as Express Recycling’s closest site in Noosaville hit record numbers of containers returned in the first week of January 2023 and record numbers of containers are retuned around the state.

“We are excited to see Containers for Change expand in the Hervey Bay region as more people become aware of the scheme.”

“We love working with the local charities, schools, sporting clubs, community organisations and local businesses to help them raise some valuable funds through recycling their eligible 10-cent containers.”

“We currently work closely with Fraser Coast Tourism and from the containers collected from those events, the funds are donated to the local SES,” she said.

All members of the community are welcome to the opening event beginning at 9am, Friday, 20 January 2023.
