Statement on the Parliamentary Inquiry into Queensland’s Container Refund Scheme

Container Exchange (COEX) welcomes the Parliamentary Inquiry into Queensland’s Container Refund Scheme and sees this as an opportunity to build on the program’s success.

Since its inception six years ago, the not-for-profit scheme has provided significant social, environmental and community benefits across Queensland. Our scheme has one of the highest collection rates in the country, which is supported by existing expansion initiatives.

In the next few months Queensland will reach the significant milestone of 10 billion beverage containers returned and $1 billion in 10-cent refunds delivered back into the pockets of Queenslanders.

We look forward to working with the Minister, the Government and the people of Queensland to find new opportunities to boost recycling rates and deliver even greater outcomes for the State.

There are a range of key levers at a state and local government level that would boost both recycling rates and the impact of the scheme for the Queensland community, and we welcome the opportunity to work with the Minister to explore these further.

Submissions to the inquiry are welcomed from all interested parties and you can find out more information here.
